ENGL 3130: Business Writing

Memo and Meeting Minutes

The most directly applicable course in the Rhetoric catalogue, English 3130 revolves around formal forms of communication and the expectations of business settings. Our final project exercised writing a memo, composing a proposal, and recording meeting minutes. The motivation behind assigning this as a group project was to mimic professional settings and practice team unity.

Myself and my partners discuss each of our roles and objectives in the meeting minutes, brainstorming a project that all three of us believed as realistic and academically stimulating. As reflected in the meeting minutes, we decided to propose English 3130 as a course required in Area A1 of the undergraduate class catalogue. However, neither of my group members attended class consistently, so I assumed the role of project manager. I ended up assigning roles, applying progress checkpoints, and regulating our communication. While I had wished my partners had been more dependable and present in these processes, the final project presented me with a leadership opportunity. Being the project manager prepared me for future roles by giving me a perspective outside and above that of a student or intern.
